With the evolution in technology we have access to variety of music on single click. We listen to music of many artists, along with listening we can watch music of many artists on YouTube.

In Indian classical music we have different gharanas in vocal & instruments. These gharanas are different from each other because of differences in Technique & Compositions.

Technique : Technique means how to play/sing a particular note/syllable, for example in Dilli gharana of Tabla,  â€œTi Taâ€ is played with two finger i.e. middle & index finger, in another gharana â€œTi Taâ€ is played with index & three fingers. It is basically fingering rules for playing note/syllables.

Compositions : In each gharana, we have got so many compositions, which were composed by ustads of gharana. Many compositions are very special & specific to gharana which are basically influenced by the singing/playing techniques of gharana.

We get so many beautiful compositions in every gharana, when we listen to such compositions, we are tempted to play such compositions without actually learning & understanding essence of such compositions.

Many times you manage to play compositions by just listening, but that superficial joy & temptation deviates you from your regular riyaz which is very dangerous. Because it is very necessary to fully learn & focus technique of a one gharana at one time.

If you play & practice compositions which demands different technique than you are learning currently, will ultimately make you no expert in either skill. To be a good musician you need to be master of instrument which can be achieved by only intensive practice of particular technique.

If you could not manage to play correctly, you will end up with frustration & may blame guru.

Learn & master a technique of particular gharana for 10-12 years. After that you can learn compositions of another gharana from ustad of that gharana, only after taking permission from your Guru. :-)
